    Now, I like Telecasters...

    But not quite in that way...

    My understanding is that the JM was meant to be the top of the line. Leo didn't like how the Maple looked as it worn, and the rosewood would wear better.

    Perhaps it had something to do with substantial re-tooling to put the rosewood. on. I kow that for most of the 60s, maple boards were only available as special order, and then, they were constructed just like the rosewood ones--no skunk stripe, just a separate maple fretboard attached to the maple neck.

    The lore is that Leo saw some of the worn maple fingerboards on TV and thought the worn places looked dirty and were bad advertisement for Fender guitars.

    He made a few more cosmetic changes when he started seeing them on color TV.
