One reason you cannot keep them straight is that they were the earliest Fender guitars (uh, the Esquire really counts as a Telecaster, in this instance). In point of fact, and I say this as someone who has owned multiple examples of each, they are largely interchangeable. Just ask Jimi Hendrix who, though associated with the Stratocaster, recorded some iconic music with a Telecaster--e.g., "Fire," "The Wind Cries Mary," etc., (stuff from the first studio album). Think of how many people _imagine_ those songs to be Strat tunes, when they are actually Telecaster tunes. "Hey Joe"...Telecaster.
