    It's down to taste for the most part. Having had both, I like the punch of the P, but in the end if I had to choose one or the other I'd go with the Jazz because of the body shape, the versatility of the two pickups, and the narrower neck just feels more comfortable in my hand.

    If I were shopping today I'd probably look for a P/J hybrid (basically a Jazz with both P and J pickups).
    There is none so blind as he that cannot see...

    The best is a mid-90s American Deluxe Precision. It has a refined form that gives it a clean, space age look, a P-bass pickup and a Jazz pickup near the bridge, passive pups with active controls (so you can boost frequencies as well as cut), and does everything well. I know it's best because I own one! :)
