Default Deluxe Reverb 65 RI vs. Hot Rod Deluxe iii

Just looking for opinions ...both have a single 12" speaker, HRD 40 watts, 65 RI 22 watts. Is the 65 Deluxe Reverb worth the extra money (opinions wanted). I've noticed though, the HRD is always listed as a "best seller ". I just wonder if I should've held out for the 65?

I have both. Unless you need the extra 18 watts (unlikely) the DRRI is the better amp IMO. More usable in most situations and the reverb tank sounds better to me. I have a blonde edition that came with a Patriot Swamp Thing speaker. I like the HRD but dang that thing is loud, there is a audio taper mod that I need to do to it, the volume seems to go either 1 or 10.

Well, the Deluxe Reverb is often considered a "desert island" amp, and I sure love mine. It often seems to be the peak of a fine balance of weight, power, and tone. But the Hot Rod also has lots of believers, especially with those who play loud or with a drummer who just loves to hit things hard.

You could always just throw a volume pedal or potentiometer in the FX loop like this.

Or put an EQ in the FX loop.

Or do the "George Benson mod" and change the tube (to a 12AT7).

The DRRI is the one I would pick, those things sound great!

I guess in all honesty, my only real complaint about the Hot Rod is no way to turn off the reverb other than reaching for the knob, I appreciate all the the input, I guess for now I'll just wait it out, and eventually pick up a 65 Deluxe if one should happen to appear within my budget!
    Thanks again!

I think it was Danny Gatton that said, "If you turn it up loud enough, you don't need reverb."
