Default The original “black dense foam”(?) strip under chrome-plated bridge cover Pre-CBS

Thought I’d put the old bridge cover back on & have discovered (35 years later) that the dense foam strip (to mute overtones~sustain?) has dried out/calcified to a state of brittle-stiffness. Should I take a putty knife & scrape that out & install new dense foam.
    Thanks, Brian

I would just remove it, buff up the area, and call it good!
Some contend that rock 'n roll is bad for the body & bad for the soul
Bad for the heart, bad for the mind, bad for the deaf & bad for the blind.
It makes some men crazy and they talk like fools.
Makes some men crazy and they start to drool.

I'm with Stan, clean it out first and see if it's okay without.

If you then get overtone issues you know to replace it then.
I'm a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.
