Never tried grain filler on TOP of lacquer before. Maybe i'll give it a try.

Go for it!! If it works, you'll have a back-up weapon in yer box. If not, (and I kinda think it will work just fine) you won't be much further behind than now... (be sure to read the manufacturers complete list of caveats, warnings, cautions, and whoops's in tiny print at their web site)
I don't think I'd even sand it first... why fill all those little divots with dust and then try to clean them...Bottle Rocket Scientist.....

Well, this is what we ended up with. Should look OK with a pearl pickguard and hardware .
