OK... got a new PG pickup in my hand. According to Seymour, a Pearly Gates bridge pickup resistance is supposed to measure 8.1. Mine measures 7.7. Is this a bad thing? Should I send it back or take a chance??

Well... interesting turn here... the new Pearly Gates sounded exactly like the old one in the second position. So... off to SD website to a pretty interesting array of commentary... It seems as if Fender, when they made this guitar, must have ordered special SD pickups with the polarity reversed in order to play nice with the single coils. (with no comment as to that fact/possibility in publication or schematic) I pulled the green (ground) off the volume pot and swapped it with the black wire from the 5 way switch, and VIOLA!~!!.... Instant second position tone that's been missing since the first time it was rewired.

Love all FIVE positions, now!! Thanks to all who helped or offered, and to those who went above and beyond!

"Captain's Log, Stardate 43198.7. The Enterprise remains in standard orbit while we investigated the tragedy which had struck the Pearly Gates solar system. Lieutenant Badxmpl has been beamed aboard safely, following a successful mission to the planet surface, which resulted in one loss of life. Whatever the explanation, it will not bring back a valued and trusted tone source. However, order has now been restored within the electro-magnetic flux, so warp speed can now be re-engaged."
