    Default Schwartzentech 14-position stat mod

Do you think a 14-position (20 if you add phase switches to the tone pots) sss Strat circuit is desirable, and marketable?
It requires replacing the 5-way switch with 3 mini toggles.

You got me. I'm not going to do it, but maybe everybody else would.

Welcome to FT, n2! I don't use all five of mine, now.... Have you done this already? I'm wondering how much difference there actually is. Got clips?

I had just developed a 13 position switch and thought I was really onto something. Now there is a 14 position switch!!!!!
Sorry, Man. I couldn't resist. It certainly wouldn't appeal to me but I am not the target for much of anything. I'm happy with 6 strings and 3 or 5 pickup positions. It may appeal to someone who can live with just one guitar. Just thinking out loud. Good luck to you.
I'm not sayin' that, I'm just sayin'......

Two words: Gibson Vari-tone. I think it comes on the Lucille model. Been around for years. No permanent mods required, just yank a tone pot and stick one in it's place.

It makes more sense to have an outboard mod as once the novelty wears off, it never gets used again.

I think the Vari-Tone is a bit more complicated that just the 6-position switch... aren't there some resistors and caps in stuff that change the tone of each setting?

Again, I have to say that I get much, much more tonal variation by changing the way I pick than I would from a pick guard full of microswitches.

Over the years, I've tried almost every wiring trick I could find, and most of them were too complicated to remember in the midst of the onstage battle. Now I'm back to simpler stuff and loving it. I do have a few Strats with blender pots, and a few Teles with four-way switches, but none of the wacky stuff anymore. That's not to say that a lot of players still yearn for the nearly unobtainable!

As I remember I once had a Strat pickguard I wired up with three mini-switches and got along with that one pretty well.

I modified my PRS 513 so it's now a 519. 19 positions is enough for any man.
