Cleaned up the bracket and attached it to the original pickguard.

I had the shopvac held right up to the pole pieces when I scraped the rust off them.

Danny's fix for a string alignment issue was to re-notch the first two saddles:

    Polished the frets...

    Rejuvinated!

That is just freaking amazing that you're getting to work on a guitar that Danny played. FWIW, I have used a similar fix for a loose knob, I put a piece of bamboo into the slot on the pup and pushed the old knob back on.

It is amazing for me. I have to say, I felt the vibe from this guitar from the moment I was first alone with it. As I very slowly started to assess the issues I put my iPod on "shuffle", as I usually do when I'm working. I removed the tortoise pickguard and cleaned up the bracket. I then attached the bracket to the original black pickguard, and the very moment I started to mount the original pickguard to the guitar, the iPod launched into a Danny song, "Funhouse" from "Cruisin' Deuces".

WOW... Danny's watchin'. +1 to what Stan said. A totally amazing opportunity for you, and for us as we watch with drool runnin' down our collective chins. I wanna touch it... hold it.... maybe even smell it. But not play it- seems like that might be some kind of sacrilege.... I love the little 'personalizations like the tape and the string spacing; things that any of us mortals might do....
    Nice work, Mike!

Holy crap, it happened again! I just cleaned the pots with DeOxit this morning. One of the knobs was a bit loose, so I used Danny's own trick and wrapped a small strip of masking tape around the shaft. Just as I was putting the first knob back onto the guitar, my iPod launched into "Funky Mama", from the 88 Elmira St CD. I tell you, I could feel him in the room with me! Bear in mind that this iPod has 17,000 tracks on it and it played a DG track just as I was putting the old pickguard back on it and again today when Ii was just putting the first knob on. And today is Holly's birthday. I told her I'm sure he's with us and watching over her, and loving his grandchildren! Can't wait for the movie to come out.

Dang, that is some serious mojo, Mike! You've got the ghost of Danny Gatton in your studio, man, enjoy it while it lasts.

Amazing, I got to hold that guitar and wish I had a better idea of the man, his talent and greatness before I did. I would have had a better idea of the privilege Mike allowed me. The next day while on the way home we had a lay over for our next flight and I used my Iphone to learn a little about Danny, I was blown away at the man and his talent.

Thanks again Mike for everything we can't wait to return.
