    Default Peg

Guys, sorry if this is not guitar related. But it is Donald Fagen! Anyway, a great insight into how he came up with those chords, and a glimpse into hoe he thinks.

Donald Fagen is a master, with a lot of soul. I continue to be one of his greatest fans.

Bad for the heart, bad for the mind, bad for the deaf & bad for the blind.

There are a few more clips like this where he talks about other Steely Dan songs as well. I remember watching this video (on VHS, back in the day!) and getting nothing out of it when I was younger. But for some reason, I was able to follow his thinking a lot better now, and can't help marvel at the way those two guys wrote. There's another great clip of someone interviewing Jay Graydon about his solo on Peg.

As interesting as the stories are about them being uber picky (going through band after band in the studio for the same song), the real big deal for me this time was how they came up with song structures, chord voicings and even little segments in between to lead the listener from the end of the chorus to the intro, to set up for the next verse. I realize this is old hat to a lot of songwriters, but I guess, not to me!

I love The Dan too. I clicked on the link, though, and saw it was gunna be over 7 minutes long and almost lost interest. Couldn't imagine ruminating over "Peg" for that long.
Boy- those 7 minutes went fast and then I had to watch a couple more... Good stuff- Thanks, Srini!

FWIW, for those of you that have a Netflix account, there are some great Fagan stuff on there too that will pull you in and drown you! And if you survive that, there are some other great examples for some of our heros.

And if you love Steely Dan, do check out Donald Fagen's solo work. Those are at least as good as any of the Dan's albums.

I was exactly the same way, and boy that time just flew by!

Stan, no luck on Netflix. If there are any titles you remember, that may be helpful in the search.

Wow, those I mentioned are not available anymore. I even looked in my "favorites" list, and no show. Netflix does change their libraries on an ongoing basis, so I guess classic rock is not cool anymore. Dang!

Really though, if you haven't heard them yet, go and check out Donald's solo albums, Nightfly, Kamakiriad, and Morph the Cat. Each of them are incredible.

And don't forget his most recent (2012) Sunken Condos.
