Default Successfully marriage of passive and active pickups. Possible?

I know it should not interfere with pears and apples, babies and frogs, but I came across one idea: my son has an axe equipped with X2N & Super Distortion and it sounds very decent for most of music genres, but as he doesn't have some muscle amp (Engl, Peavey, Mesa...) planned to upgrade one of pickups with some of EMG stable, probably with EMG-81 instead X2N. I made some research and found that it's possible to pair active and passive pickups with some good and mean results:
a good one is that you get axe with mighty bridge PU able to roar and bite (active) and in same time get warm tone with passive PU. Mean side of the story is that it's impossible to get useful sound when both of pickups paired; simply passive PU become quiet, almost imperceptible! So, only two switch positions are possible: rhythm and treble, no more. Anybody solved this on proper way?

Wow! No, I have never tried to mix the two worlds, so I don't know how to do it and don't know if it can even be done. Good luck with that one!
