    Well, it seemed to do the trick. It looks like the polepieces are all of a size, because once I heated them and pushed them down, they all hit bottom and ended up the same height. Judging from the behavior of the nearby screws, the magnets certainly have not been demagnetized. I haven't restrung yet, and that'll be the final test to see if the tone has changed at all.

    Well, so far the only difference I've noticed is that the middle pickup's not working, nor is any switch position that involves the middle pickup. I'm guessing something's shorting to the shielding. I'll go under the hood tonight & find out. If it's worst case and I've somehow screwed the pooch on that pup, I have a spare in my parts box. No worries.

    Well, the story has a happy ending (I guess). When I started to pull off the pickguard, the middle pup started working again, and nothing I could do afterwards would make it fail, so I'm calling it good and cashing my chips. I'm guessing some wire was getting pinched the wrong way in there.
