I own 6 bass guitars - a Gretch G6119BO Broadkaster Bass, a Fender Jaguar, a Fender Standard Jazz, a Fender Standard Precision, a Fender Mustang and my most recent, a Fender Mark Hoppus Signature in seafoam green.

The Mark Hoppus sig bass is the one I play the most lately. It's a fun bass - sure, it doesn't have a tone control, but you don't need it. Just crank it up the volume and let fly. It's sort of like my Gretsch 6120SHA Brian Setzer Hot Rod - it also has just the volume control. Simplistic and fun. If I do feel the need to add more depth to the bass, I just use one of my pedals (reverb, flange, distortion, delay).

I recently made the transition from guitar to bass (still play guitar, but wanted to get my bass skills up). I found it helpful starting off with the short-scale bass guitars like my Mustang and Broadkaster. I'm comfortable now with regular scale bass guitars. Just my two-cents if it helps your transition.
