Default J Bass Geddy Lee New string problems

    Hi there,
I got a Geddy Lee Sig. Series J-Bass and I needed some new strings cause the Ernie ball's I had on there were getting pretty worn. I didnt really liek the EB's because there was alot of buzz on them. I was recently told that whenever you change string brands/ gauges you have to have your bass "set-up". Well Im pretty familiar with raising and lowering the action so I figured no problem and decided to get the DR EXTRA LIFE "BLACK BEAUTIES" (45, 65, 85, 105). Strung them up on the bass, stretched them out, and tuned them up. Keep in mind that I play mostly half step as well. I hit open E and it rattled like a tin can. Hit A and it didnt rattle quiet as bad but still pretty lousy. D rattled a little but not too bad. G was horrible, I had to raise the action SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the rest of the strings to get rid of the buzz which made for very akward action that I do not like. MY QUESTION IS... are there any other adjustments I can make to the guitar to use these strings (Cause they do look B.A. and have nice tone) at a playable level? I really need low action. The damn thing about bass strings are, they cost like 30+ dollars and its kind of a pain in the wallet if you dont like them. Damn guitarist and there 7 dollar strings!!!!!!!

You didn't mention what the gauges of the old strings were. Were they significantly heavier or lighter? That would have an effect on how much pull is exerted on the neck. That might be adjustable by tweaking the truss rod.

There's many things that will cause string buzz. Just take it in and have a pro look at it.

I don't remember what gauge the old strings were... they were Ernie Balls I THINK they were the "Regular Slinky Bass Nickel Wound .050 - .105" but Im not positive on that. Those had an annoying buzz to them too but these are FFFar worse.

Does the neck have enough relief in it? If the strings have different tensions, that could be the problem.
